Stephan John Welch
Stephan was born in 1950 in Sydney, Australia, of mixed English and German-Jewish parentage. He has been brought up and educated in England and France.
Ordained in 1977, he has served as a parish priest in the dioceses of St Alban's, Canterbury, Oxford and London, in parishes of every variety from the deeply rural to the inner city. At every stage he has been in close association with Church schools and has been a chair of governors in both the primary and secondary sectors. He has also served on a couple of SACREs. He was installed as Archdeacon of Middlesex in May 2006, a post to which the Bishop of London has attached the portfolio for young people in the diocese, including chairmanship of the London Diocesan Board for Schools.
Stephan is married to Jenny, and they have three mature sons, one of whom teaches science in a west London secondary school. He loves anything to do with the sea and his principle relaxation is sailing his small yacht, "Wistful Spirit". French language and literature and a good bottle of Bordeaux figure among his other interests.
